Maths

Phonics and reading

In Early Years and Key Stage 1, I focus on developing strong number sense – counting confidently, understanding quantity, mastering number bonds, and building fluency within 10 and 20. These early foundations are essential for everything that follows.

In Lower Key Stage 2, I strengthen place value, secure mental strategies, develop fluency in the four operations, and build confidence with times tables. I also introduce reasoning skills so children can explain their thinking clearly.

By Upper Key Stage 2, support becomes more targeted and precise – tackling fractions, decimals and percentages, multi-step problem solving, arithmetic fluency, and preparing for end-of-Key-Stage expectations.

At every stage, sessions are guided by specific, measurable targets so progress is clear and purposeful. Step by step, I close gaps, build confidence, and create secure mathematical foundations that carry children successfully into the next phase of learning.

In Early Years and Key Stage 1, I focus on securing core phonics skills – recognising sounds, blending to read, segmenting to spell, and building fluency with tricky words. Establishing accurate decoding and early comprehension ensures children develop confidence from the very beginning.

In Lower Key Stage 2, the focus shifts towards reading fluency, expression, and deeper understanding. I strengthen comprehension skills such as retrieving information, making inferences, understanding vocabulary in context, and summarising key ideas.

By Upper Key Stage 2, support becomes more targeted and analytical – developing higher-level comprehension, exploring author intent, refining vocabulary choices, and preparing for end-of-Key-Stage expectations. I also support spelling patterns, grammar awareness, and written responses linked to reading.
