What does 'Mastery' really mean for your child?
Mastery before moving on
Strong foundations, no hidden gaps
Tailored, not templated
I don't rush, taking one step at a time. I focus on securing understanding first, filling gaps and revisiting learning until it truly sticks and mastery is achieved.
I carefully identify and rebuild missing building blocks so that progress feels easier and more confident for your child.
Every programme is shaped around the child in front of me - their pace, their needs and how they learn best.
Mastery approach to Maths
Mastery approach to Phonics and Reading
Strong foundations first
Children take time to secure key number facts and concepts before moving on. Just like building a bridge, those foundations need to be solid so learning can safely build upwards.
Depth, not rush
Instead of racing ahead, children explore ideas in different ways – using objects, pictures, talk and written methods. This helps learning “stick”.
Everyone can succeed
Maths for Mastery is built on the belief that all children can do maths. With the right support and time, confidence grows alongside understanding.
Making connections
Children learn how numbers link together, helping them reason, explain their thinking and solve problems – not just get an answer.
Revisiting skills until they are secure
Reading skills are practised again and again in a supportive way. This repetition helps children feel safe, successful, and confident instead of rushed or overwhelmed.
Develop phonic skills
Spelling and writing skills, as children understand the relationship between sounds and letters.
Vocabulary growth, as children can decode and understand new words.
Secure letter–sound knowledge
Children need to clearly know the sounds that letters and letter groups make. When these are secure, reading feels less confusing and much more manageable.
‘Learning to read’ leads to ‘reading to learn’
If your child reads slowly or pauses frequently, it may be a sign they need more practice with phonics rules. Slow reading can also be due to a lack of confidence or unfamiliarity with vocabulary.
